A brief description about this Activity.
This online course is a relevant and essential introduction to the Health & Safety aspects of living and working onboard a ship of any type or size, anywhere in the world. This course is separated into 3 modules. Each module will lead the learner through the topic areas in turn, introducing the various codes and legislation that exist, and outlining the various hazards faced by seafarers. Module 3 completes the course by focusing on survival at sea in the event that the worst happens, and the crew find themselves in the water. This part of the course emphasises the importance of personal floatation devices (life jackets) as being fundamental to crew survival. Also examined are lifebuoys, survival craft, distress flares and other emergency equipment such as electronic beacons and radio systems. In the second part of this module, the learner will study the effects of exposure on the human body. This includes cold shock, hypothermia, dehydration, starvation and the importance of the will to survive in ensuring crew survival in the event of abandoning ship.
