Overview for Complex Trauma: A Body Based Approach to Working with Dissociation with Patricia Dean

A brief description about this Activity.

Have you ever lost your keys, missed your exit, or were surprised how a 10 hour drive went by so quickly? If so, you are already familiar with how dissociation shows up from time to time in our daily lives. For someone who has experienced trauma, however, it can become chronic. When dissociation is pervasive, it can not only impact a person’s ability to function, it can undermine their sense of who they are. In this training, we’ll be looking more deeply at dissociation, and how a body-based approach can support clients in building their capacity for presence. Dissociation is a response when the nervous system is overwhelmed. This is an organic response, not one of choice but comes from the Reptilian Brain to protect the whole system – A Survival Part. We will be touching into “parts work” and attachment styles and examining how developmental trauma lays the foundation for dissociation at the somatic level. We will be learning about how dissociation disrupts the conscious awareness of sensory information. And we will discuss how building sensory awareness can be powerful in supporting clients to access and process previously unconscious material. We will be talking about coupling dynamics. Couplings are associations between stimulus and the response that follows. There can be “over-coupling” (over associations) or “under-coupling” (fragmented or dis-associated). An awareness of these coupling dynamics is essential for understanding the shifts that can take place as a client is moving into more presence. Through exercises, attendees will learn several activities to slowly help their clients begin to embody and increase their capacity for regulation while having their “wise mind” be their nurturing parent. I will be incorporating several clinical cases to help bring this learning to life. Any professional who works with traumatized individuals will find this training essential because it incorporates the body perspective—Bottom up. I will be utilizing my learnings and experiences as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and a Transforming Touch® Therapist to this webinar.
