Overview for Introduction to Compassion-Focused Therapy with Dr Emily Pathe

A brief description about this Activity.

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is an integrative therapy which draws upon evolutionary, social, developmental psychology, Buddhist philosophy, neuroscientific findings, and Cognitive-Behavioural approaches. Developed by Professor Paul Gilbert (OBE) in the 2000s, this transdiagnostic approach was initially developed to support people with mental health struggles related to high levels of shame and self-criticism. CFT posits that shame and criticism are at the core of many mental health struggles and can also serve to perpetuate emotional distress. CFT is now used as an intervention for a wide range of psychological difficulties and has a rapidly growing evidence base. This course introduces attendees to the key principles of compassion-focused therapy. We explore the definition of compassion, the emotion regulation systems outlined within the CFT model, as well as the roles of shame and self-criticism in maintaining emotional difficulties. Some common blocks to compassion experienced by both clients and therapists will also be explored. Attendees will be invited to engage in some optional experiential exercises. Attendees will also be encouraged to hold in mind their personal development throughout the day, reflecting on how we can apply some of the principles of compassion to our own lives.
