A brief description about this Activity.
This Legionella Awareness course has been designed for all those who need an awareness of Legionella bacteria. At the end of this course you should be able to understand what Legionella bacteria is and how it effects you. You should understand relevant Guidance and Legislation, the requirements of the HSE's ACOP L8, what should be included in a Legionella Risk Assessment and when to test for Legionella bacteria and what action to take if you have a positive test result for Legionella. In the second part of the course we will look at the requirement for Temperature Monitoring, Thermostatic Mixing Valves, Scalding Risks, System Flushing, Cleaning and Disinfection and finally Record Keeping. During the course you will take four multiple choice tests which will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the course material. Each test has a pass mark of 70% with a maximum of 5 attempts at each test. Protecting employees, visitors and the wider public from the risk of Legionella is a legal requirement under health & safety law. These requirements are found in the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Act (COSHH) 2002 & The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999. In support of these legal requirements in November 2013 the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) released the 4th edition of the Approved Code of Practice for the Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems commonly called ACOP L8 and technical guidance HSG 274. The code of practice has been released by the HSE with the consent of the Secretary of State. It gives practical advice on how to comply with the law. The code of practice has a special legal status. If you are prosecuted for a breach of health and safety law, and it is proved that you did not follow the relevant provisions of the code of practice, you will need to show that you have complied with the law in some other way or a court may find you at fault. The HSE's ACOP L8 requires that all those involved in the management, control and prevention of Legionella be technically competent. Water Wise Services are one of the few Legionella service providers in the UK to meet the Government Endorsed standard for Technical Competence. This course will cover technical aspects of temperature monitoring, Legionella testing, thermostatic mixing valves, cleaning & disinfection and scalding risks which will either allow you to carry out these tasks yourself in a competent manner or ensure that they are carried out competently by others.
