Overview for Suicide and Self-harm Interventions: Art Therapy Approach with Tatjana Simakova

A brief description about this Activity.

The rates of suicide ideation and self-harm are consistently growing among young people worldwide. This workshop is specifically designed to address the needs of professionals working with those who may present with suicide ideation, have made suicide attempts or are engaging in self-harm behaviour. The content of this workshop is experiential in nature focused on building knowledge, confidence, and assurance when responding to such issues. Despite the heavy subject of the workshop it is designed to be informative, interactive and engaging. Numerous clinical studies indicate that art therapy is highly effective at preventing suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviour in youth. ‘Art therapy techniques can reduce suicidal impulses and depression, by increasing the happiness index, which can serve as a protective factor against suicide, and by increasing emotional stability while reducing stress’ (Sun-Hyun Kim, So-Jeong Woo, 2014). This workshop highlights the advantages of creativity when working with adolescents. It offers numerous art therapy tools and techniques on how to engage the young mind to help them find alternatives to suicidal ideation or self-harm behaviour. ‘You cannot wipe the tears off another’s face without getting your own hands wet.’ – Zulu proverb. Working with suicide ideation and self-harm can be difficult hence this workshop will also address the significance of minding our own wellbeing while meeting the needs of our clients. The workshop offers creative ways and space to explore how to support ourselves in this work and the challenges that can emerge.
