Overview for The Trauma-Sensitive Writing Process: Transgenerational Trauma with Emile Hill Dittmer

A brief description about this Activity.

When exposed to traumatic events the self is fragmented. A gentle step by step reconstruction of the past is required through rediscovery. This is possible in the trauma-sensitive writing (TSW) process and when engaged brings transformative results. Self-care, trust, reflection, choice and empowerment are keywords during this journey. The goal in this TSW process is to write through and out of life events that have affected us deeply, piecing together fragments in order to able to look at our life stories from outside and other different perspectives. In our writing, we move forward in a soft way, so that we can approach what we need to extract. Difficult life events often cause a sense of the lack of room for maneuver and the power to influence a situation. Writing is one of many ways towards a greater awareness. When we start listening inward and noting what we see and feel, we gradually take our voices more seriously. The training contains a step-by-step trauma sensitive method, this gentle way of discovering and writing our past is deeply healing on a profound level and by blending this with other elements creates a powerful balance. The teacher will also share some of her own story and how revealing parts of her transgenerational family trauma, through writing, has been transformative. She will describe some of the techniques she’s used and how this writing journey has been life changing to both herself and her clients. Reflective writing of this kind and transformation are closely intertwined, constituting movements in life towards inner peace, to view the world with honest eyes and our place within it.
