Overview for Trauma and Sexual Problems – Silva Neves

A brief description about this Activity.

In this 3-hour workshop, Silva will present how trauma effects sexual functioning. Although some clients may come to therapy because they experience sexual problems as a result of trauma, often, they come to therapy because they are disturbed by past trauma but feel reluctant to discuss the impact that it has on their sex lives. This workshop will equip therapists to talk about sex in the consulting room, and also to work with sexual problems that arise from trauma. Silva will discuss how trauma can have an impact on people’s sex lives, and focusing on particular types of trauma that most often will affect people’s sex lives such as rape, sexual abuse in childhood, some invasive surgery, accidents on the genital areas, childbirth and sexual betrayal. The workshop will list the most common sexual problems, and how to assess them: vaginismus, dyspareunia, inhibited sexual desire, anorgasmia, unreliable erections, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, anodyspareunia, as well as core beliefs that get in the way of a satisfying sex life. Silva will explain the main psychosexual therapeutic strategies in working with sexual problems arising from trauma. Although this workshop is only an introduction to trauma-informed psychosexual therapy, it will help therapists with some practical tools that are easy to integrate in their existing practice. This workshop will also be an opportunity for therapists to self-reflect on their level of comfort in talking about sex and sexual functioning in explicit ways with their clients, which includes therapists’ own biases and core beliefs about sex and relationships.
