Overview for Use of Metaphor in Psychotherapy with Weronika Kucharska

A brief description about this Activity.

People use metaphors to express through words or images, feeling which are too elaborate to explain otherwise. Our use of similes and metaphors in everyday language has somewhat become a norm; we know what we mean when we say “the cats out of the bag” or “I’m stuck”. Yet, when faced with a client who is unable to express his feelings or needs in a therapy space, we struggle to find common ground and feel we have nothing left to offer. The word “metaphor” comes from the Greek meaning “transfer” or “to bring beyond”. It meant to express something that is “beyond” an immediate concrete or logical understanding and produce new openings on the imaginative and emotional dimension in a person’s inner world. In those moments of “stuck-ness”, metaphor can be a way back onto the path of exploration for a client who may feel like they have nowhere else to go. This course will look at creative ways of engaging clients through feeling comfortable in accessing and utilising metaphors within the therapeutic space. It is not aimed at training professionals in metaphor therapy or creative arts therapy, but rather using that perspective to explore and develop ways in which to engage with symbols, stories and other metaphors the clients bring into the space.
