Overview for Working with Resistant Ambivalence: Challenges, Opportunities and Strategies with Maryna Bentley

A brief description about this Activity.

Resistance to change is often encountered in the context of counselling and psychotherapy. Both clients, and practitioners are susceptible to this experience. Traditionally it is viewed as a problem without easy solutions. This workshop will introduce an alternative framework to the understanding of and working with this phenomenon, by reframing resistance to change into the experience of resistant ambivalence. The emergence of this approach was recently stimulated by the theorising about psychological survival during pandemic and its implication for the behavioural change in clients and practitioners. This workshop will offer an opportunity to reflect on the concept of radical acceptance. You will explore the value of understanding and working with different forms of resistance as ambivalence. You will be invited to approach resistant ambivalence in the context of an integrative understanding of psychosocial polyphony. Via practical examples, case studies and interactive debates, you will uncover diverse resolutions to the tension between the voice that moves toward change and a voice that struggles against it. Therapeutic techniques of motivational interviewing and the two-chair method, consistent with integrative understanding of resistant ambivalence, will be discussed. Self-development exercises are a large part of this workshop. You will be invited to reflect on how in your practice you can enhance the spirit of acceptance of the client’s worldview through attuned partnership. The workshop also includes theoretical input, practical exercises, and small and large group discussion. The workshop is appropriate for training and practising counsellors, psychotherapists, counselling psychologists, and other mental health professionals.
