About This Activity
The Core of Knowledge training provides essential theoretical knowledge for operators and practitioners using Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) equipment in clinical and aesthetic settings. This accredited activity equips learners with a comprehensive understanding of laser physics, tissue interactions, hazards, safety management, and regulatory compliance.
Aims
• To provide learners with the theoretical framework required to safely and effectively operate laser and IPL devices.
• To ensure compliance with UK legislation and standards, including the MHRA and local authority requirements.
• To prepare learners for further practical training in specific laser/IPL treatments.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the activity, learners will:
• Understand the fundamental principles of laser and IPL technology.
• Recognise how lasers and IPL interact with tissue.
• Identify potential hazards and implement appropriate safety precautions.
• Understand the regulatory framework surrounding laser and IPL use in the UK.
• Appreciate the importance of laser protection supervision and the role of the Laser Protection Advisor (LPA).
Content Overview
• Introduction to Lasers and IPL: Types of lasers, IPL systems, and key characteristics.
• Laser and Light-Tissue Interaction: Absorption, reflection, scattering, and transmission; chromophores and selective photothermolysis.
• Hazards and Risks: Optical, skin, fire, and electrical hazards; non-beam hazards.
• Risk Management and Control Measures: Laser protection protocols, signage, eye protection, and controlled areas.
• UK Legislation and Standards: MHRA guidance, local authority licensing, and relevant regulations.
• Roles and Responsibilities: Operators, Laser Protection Supervisors (LPS), and Laser Protection Advisors (LPA).
• Safe Systems of Work (SSOW): Local Rules, treatment protocols, and documentation.
Delivery Method
• Online learning module (self-paced or live webinar)
• Interactive presentations and case studies
• Assessment through multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to confirm understanding
Assessment and Certification
• A written assessment is completed at the end of the training.
• Successful candidates will receive a Core of Knowledge certificate, valid for 3 years.
