Foreign bodies in the ear are a common presentation in the private sector, primary and urgent care.Although many can be removed safely, inappropriate assessment or poor technique can result in pain, trauma ,infection or damage to the ear. Practitioners therefore need the knowledge to assess case carefully, recognise when it is safe to proceed, and understand when referral to a more experienced practitioner or specialist is required. This CPD theory learning module has been developed to provide practitioners with the theoretical knowledge required to support the safe assessment and management of patients presenting with an ear foreign body. Throughout the course, safety, decision making and accountability are emphasised. Learners are encouraged to work within their scope of practice, recognise contraindications and appreciate that safe management sometimes means choosing not to remove a foreign body and refer as appropriate. Entry Requirements This module is suitable for registered healthcare professionals and ear wax removal practitioners who have confirmed that they are already certified in ear wax removal methods, including microsuction, warm water irrigation and use of manual tools, including alligator forceps, jobs horn and curette.
