People with PMDD experience significantly higher rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, yet the pathways driving this risk remain poorly understood. This webinar introduces a PMDD-adapted version of the Integrated Motivational-Volitional (IMV) model of suicide, highlighting how cyclical symptoms may contribute to the development of suicidal ideation and behavior and discussing implications for prevention and clinical care.
Summary
Suicide prevention is a priority area for PMDD stakeholders, including those who live with PMDD, and their loved ones, clinicians, researchers and support organisations.
This new model identifies PMDD-specific factors that advance our understanding of suicidality, including phase of the menstrual cycle, hormonal ‘triggers’, neurodivergence and more.
The new IMV-PMDD model provides a framework to enhance the quality of screening, assessment and management of those living with heightened PMDD-suicide risk.
