About This Webinar

This is the second masterclass in the Climate Transition Plan Masterclass Series, providing a practical, expert-led look at the first two steps of building a credible transition plan: establishing the baseline and defining the direction. It covers how GHG accounting evolves into a full transition plan, the benefits of transition planning for credibility, resilience, and access to finance, and the practical steps involved in emissions accounting, climate risk mapping, and target setting. Using recognised guidance such as the GHG Protocol and SBTi, this session shows how to set a robust baseline and translate ambition into near-term and long-term targets.

Summary

This is the second masterclass in the Climate Transition Plan Masterclass Series, providing a practical, expert-led look at the first two steps of the four-step transition plan methodology: establishing the baseline and defining the direction.

It focuses on applied learning, using recognised guidance such as the GHG Protocol and SBTi to show how organisations can move from GHG accounting to a credible, actionable transition plan.

You will learn how to:
◆ Understand how GHG accounting evolves into a full transition plan
◆ Recognise the benefits of transition planning, including credibility, access to finance, and regulatory compliance
◆ Establish a robust baseline through emissions accounting, climate risk analysis, and assessment of current actions
◆ Set near-term and long-term emission reduction targets, and define an overall strategy for implementation

Learning Outcomes

By completing this masterclass, you will build practical capability in establishing a baseline and defining targets for a climate transition plan.

From Measurement to Management
◆ Understand how GHG accounting, covering emission sources, efficiency improvements, and benchmarking, evolves into a transition plan with clear targets, actions, and accountability
◆ Recognise the benefits of transition planning, including credibility, operational resilience, access to finance, competitiveness, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder trust

Step 1: Establishing the Baseline
◆ Apply the GHG Protocol methodology to account for emissions across Scope 1, 2, and relevant Scope 3 categories
◆ Map physical and transition risks using regional or national climate risk projections
◆ Define a baseline and assess current programmes, actions, and commitments already in place for climate mitigation and risk management

Step 2: Defining the Direction
◆ Set near-term (around 5 years) and long-term (15 years or more) emission reduction targets, using Paris-aligned SBTi guidance
◆ Understand the general approach to target setting under 1.5°C and well-below-2°C ambitions, including annual reduction rates for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions
◆ Consider sector-specific target setting needs, such as intensity targets, and integrate climate targets into business strategy and decision-making

Format

Climate Transition Plan Masterclass 2: Setting the Baseline and Defining Targets is a single recorded session, approximately 1 hour in duration, and can be completed at your own pace. It is the second of four sessions in the Climate Transition Plan Masterclass Series.

Topics covered include:
- How GHG accounting evolves into a transition plan
- The benefits of transition planning
- Establishing a baseline: emissions accounting, climate risk analysis, and assessment of current actions
- Defining the direction: setting near-term and long-term targets and an overall implementation strategy
- General approaches to target setting under 1.5°C and well-below-2°C ambitions
