Online radar course for boat owners skippers and crew covering operation, fine tuning, systematic observation, plotting and collision avoidance. There are no formal prerequisites for enrolment. The course is suitable for leisure and commercial mariners, yacht crew, boat owners and others wishing to improve their understanding and practical use of marine radar. Previous navigation experience is helpful but not essential, as the course develops the subject progressively from fundamental principles through to more advanced radar interpretation and collision-avoidance techniques. The learning objectives are achieved through structured online instruction combining clear technical explanations, visual demonstrations, worked examples, radar scenarios and practical interpretation exercises. Learners progress through subjects including radar controls and optimisation, target interpretation, range and bearing measurement, plotting, vectors, CPA/TCPA, MARPA/ARPA, pilotage, radar horizon and the use of radar in restricted visibility. Knowledge and understanding are assessed through course-based questioning and a final assessment designed to confirm that the learner can correctly interpret radar information, apply relevant principles and demonstrate an appropriate understanding of safe radar operation. The course is primarily a theory and interpretation-based online programme and does not include a separately assessed onboard practical examination. Practical skills are developed through simulated radar examples, plotting exercises and scenario-based interpretation throughout the course. These elements assess the learner’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic operating situations, while the final assessment confirms overall knowledge and understanding.
